Hi everyone! When I was younger, I was such an avid reader. I could sit for hours on end and read, read, read. However, that changed when I entered high school. Readings that were assigned to me were uninteresting and sometimes I simply didn’t have time because of countless other assignments. Reading became a bore and I didn’t consider myself someone who liked it anymore. I’m realizing now that I’m in college that instead of reading books that intrigue only my imagination, there are some that can benefit other aspects of my life. I now love books that can help me in life and show me different outlooks.
One of those and the one I currently can’t put down is #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso. Sophia is the creator of Nasty Gal, which is an extremely successful clothing store. If you don’t know much about Nasty Gal, basically Sophia started on eBay auctioning off vintage clothing that she found at thrift shops and other places similar to that. When she was young, she was a dumpster-diver, thief, and even a hitchhiker. The book is about her transformation from that life to one where her wildest dreams became her reality. Her online store (and now actual store in L.A.) is one of the fastest growing businesses the fashion industry has ever seen.
I knew about this book for a while, but I just recently began to read it. And I am so glad I did! Sophia has become my newest inspiration and she has values she sets for herself that has made her a fashion icon and success. She gives the reader advice and lessons that she has realized from her own life. Like all of us, she has made so many mistakes but accomplished what not many do and learned from them. The stories she tells are not short from crazy, but from them she tells the reader what it means and what it takes to be a #Girlboss!
The road to that is not easy, as she explains. Through her eBay site, she found success, her passion, and even some hate. Nowadays, hate from people in inevitable and something you must become immune to. I’ve found this in my own life on various occasions, but here I am, writing another post and loving this passion of mine! Ignoring any hate and keep on doing what you’re doing is something every creative soul should live by!
At the beginning of every chapter, Sophia provides little high fashion-esque illustrations along with quotes. Also, at the end of every chapter there is a short story telling the journey and thoughts of other #Girlbosses. This provides me with even more inspiration of women turning what they love into something bigger. Into a career. This book has been such a great tool for me and has truly inspired me to continue to pursue my endeavors. I have been lucky enough to come from a good place where I don’t need to dumpster-dive for leftover bagels, like Sophia did. But to hear her overcome such heavy obstacles is amazing and I look up to her.
If you need a little pick me up, check out her book #Girlboss. I guarantee it’ll get you motivated to chase what you want in life and how to get there. People like Sophia can give you fantastic advice, but it’s your place to make those changes and go after what you want. It’s all up to you. Good luck! <3
