Talkative Tuesday: Must Haves for your First Year of College!

Hello everyone! Last week during Talkative Tuesday I talked about entering my third year of college and thoughts I’ve had about this time of my life. But I know starting your first year of college can be one of the most stressful times. You’re leaving the nest and starting a life on your own. So for this week, I’d like to provide a little list for those of you starting your first year. These are some things I couldn’t live without during my first year of college:

1. Storage Bins. This may seem like a no brainer, but I can’t stress enough how important it is to organize. I know for me during the last couple years I have set everything up on move in day and plan to make small changes during the year. However, I usually never get to them because of homework, studying, or other obligations. It’s important to keep little plastic bins either over your desk on shelves or even under your bed. My first year I kept large bins under my bed. With the way my room was laid out, this seemed to be the easiest way to keep organized and have all of my stuff in one place.

2. Dorm Decor. Even though move in day is most likely going to bring a little stress, find ways to make it fun for yourself. For me, I look forward to decorating my room and finding ways to make it my own. I also love seeing how others decorate their rooms as well. It’s a reflection of who you are as a person, so when it comes to decor, you do you! If you have a more minimalistic style, go for a lot of white with little accents of color. If you have a bohemian style, check out World Market for some unique pillows or Urban Outfitters for some beautiful tapestries!

3. Wall Hooks. This is probably one of the most important things you will ever buy for your dorm. Most colleges won’t allow you to nail into the walls or use thumb tacks. Your best bet is going to be the removable sticky wall hooks. You can peel these right off at the end of the year when you take down your wall decor. However, I have had trouble in the past with them staying up. If you follow the directions (unlike me) and actually clean the wall area with peroxide before you hang them, they should stay up for a long time. Another alternative that has worked for me in the past is wall putty. I’m sure that’s not the technical name for it, but that’s exactly what it is. This blue putty has to be kneaded and molded before it can hold things up. I’ve used this to keep up wires on the walls for a T.V. and it held up all year long. I believe you can get the wall hooks and the putty at Target.

4. Lighting. This might be a very particular detail, but when it comes to dorms, the one or two lights that are already installed in the ceiling are very harsh and bright. I know a lot of people who aren’t happy when it comes to dorm lighting, but there is a solution! What I have done the past couple of years is bring my own string of light bulbs. I will hang these from the hooks around the walls by my bed. This way, you have a cozy little spot when the dorm lights are turned off and the string of lights is plugged in. I know both me and my roommate love the mood lighting these give to the room and we prefer them over the ceiling light. You can get a great string of lights at Target.

As usual, I’d like to keep these Talkative Tuesday posts short and sweet. So I’ll leave you all with that and I’ll see you soon with another post! ❤
