My Favorite Post Workout Protein Bars!

Hello everyone! Yes, I’m back from Europe! It’s been way too long since I’ve posted, but I promise I have a ton to tell you. Lots have gone on within the last twelve days, but I’ll save that for another post coming soon! When you’re away from home traveling a lot, usually you have no choice but to buy every meal or order room service at your hotel. There is no cooking from home or knowing exactly what’s in your food.

My family and I needed a nice detox since eating this way, so we bought tons of fruits and veggies and have been cooking delicious and healthy meals since the second we walked in the door. It’s been awesome and super motivating! That being said, I made my own little trip to Sprouts to pick out some special things. I ended up finding TONS of amazing protein bars for when I can’t always make these fabulous home cooked meals. They’re the perfect post gym snack so I really wanted to share them with you guys!

The Complete Cookie

These little gems right here are called the Complete Cookie from Lenny & Larry’s. I initially found this brand from watching MissRemiAshten on YouTube, since she’s been on a health journey for a while now and I’m super inspired by her. I ended up seeing them a few weeks ago at the grocery storing and LOVING them! So naturally, I picked up a few more flavors at Sprouts. I can honestly say these things taste like an actual cookie! It’s kind of scary really that these things have no eggs, no soy, are non GMO, and are vegan! I have no words.

So I’ve tried the double chocolate chip and snickerdoodle flavors. I very much enjoyed both but I’d believe the snickerdoodle flavor was an actual cookie if someone handed it to me. Even better, one serving of these is actually half a cookie so they will last longer. One serving is 220 calories, so they could very easily be a meal replacement if you don’t have time for an actual healthy meal. If you have time to cook for yourself or buy a meal, I’d still recommend doing that first, as it isn’t healthy to just eat protein bars for your nutrition. However, if you have one of these in your car and you’re running late to work or school, the Complete Cookie is a fabulous option! I’m really looking forward to trying the peanut butter and chocolate chip flavors, so I’ll keep you posted on Instagram!

I first found out about these bars last semester when many of my friends in college were trying the Whole 30 plan. It worked very well for many people I know and these bars are a staple for the Whole 30 diet. I first tried the chocolate sea salt flavor and wasn’t actually a huge fan of it. The texture is extremely chewy and sticks to your teeth a bit. However, I gave them a couple more tries and now I’m literally obsessed with them! Once I got past the texture, I found them delicious and another great option if you’re running low on time in the morning. I will mention these are not vegan.

As you can see from the beautiful packaging, all the ingredients are right there on the front! 3 egg whites, 6 almonds, 4 cashews, 2 dates and NO B.S. I love it! They’re so simple and packed with flavor and great things for your body. They had tons of different flavors at Sprouts, so definitely check them out if you have one near you.

Quest Bars

These bars are ones I am least familiar with. They sold them at my university’s “grocery store” (lol) but I never picked one up. Before reviewing them, I opened one up and tried it for myself. I will never write about something that I don’t truly love or use myself, as I never want to mislead any of you. But luckily, I am now a big fan of the Quest bar! I chose the cookies & cream and S’mores flavor. Clearly, I love my sweets which is no surprise. The cookies & cream flavor was honestly delicious and I really enjoyed the texture. It’s pretty dense, but again tastes like you’re having dessert! This is another bar I saw in Remi’s videos, and I’m really glad I’m giving them a shot.

Thanks so much for reading today’s post! I’m very motivated to get healthy, so maybe this is the first post of a healthy series? Who knows. Let me know if a health journey/workout tracking series would be something you guys are interested in. Also comment down below if you’ve tried any of these protein bars before!

Valentine’s Day OOTD & Makeup Look!

Hello, loves! Happy Valentine’s Day! In honor of this day of love, I thought I’d share an OOTD. Initially, this post was going to be strictly a makeup look, however I remembered I had the perfect outfit for the day! It’s been so long since I’ve written a post like this, and I forgot how much I enjoy sharing them with you all. Whether you are in a committed relationship or a single pringle like me, I hope you can find some happiness today and celebrate the love that is so abundant in this world. Enjoy the OOTD!

Pink, Purple, and Poised

Once I knew Valentine’s Day was coming up, I really wanted to do a pink inspired makeup look. It quickly turned to a more purple look, but I’m not really mad about it. I started out with the Naked 3 palette from Urban Decay, which is completely made up of pink shades. I personally love the looks you can get from this palette and I use it quite often in the spring time. I then went in with the two dark pink shades from the Anastasia Modern Renaissance palette. This really brought out the perfect pink/rosey shades to the outer half of my lid. Lastly, I used the Purple Palette from Kylie cosmetics, which I wrote a full review of (you can find that here), and I was definitely not impressed with it. However, the one shade I truly do love I used today on my lower lash line and a bit in my outer V. I finished everything off with some black Stila waterproof eyeliner and the Better Than Sex Mascara (what else would I use? lol)

For skin, I used my usual Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and translucent powder to set everything in place. As for bronzer, blush, and highlighter, I went in with the Benefit Hoola bronzer, Nars blush in Orgasm, and a pinky toned highlighter from Kylie Cosmetics (let me know if you guys want a full review of her highlighters, I’m very torn on them too). As for lips, I went for a simple tinted chapstick from Burt’s Bees in Pomegranate.

For the Love of Yellow Hearts

This top I found at Topshop a while back. It’s a cropped blouse with a little tie in the front. I normally am not a fan of these types of tops, but the print completely won me over. The small black and white dots with the yellow hearts made for the perfect look today! The zipper running down the front gives a very edgy look, which of course I’m obsessed with. Sleeves are a big deal to me, and the one on this top definitely don’t disappoint! I love the length and combined with the flowy material, makes for a flattering ensemble.

I paired this top with my favorite jean skirt (which I thought was appropriate for the weather today, but it actually ended up raining!) I added these black heeled sandals and I think it went super well with the top. For accessories, I kept it simple with medium sized silver hoops. I love how casual yet put together this look is. You could definitely spice it up with some more serious heels if you’re going out at night or throw on some tennis shoes if you’re simply running errands.

I hope you all enjoyed this little Valentine’s themed OOTD. Let me know what you think of the makeup and outfit down below in the comments. If you have any questions, feel free to ask as well! Have a great day everyone!

Blogmas Day 7: Deep Thoughts for the Holiday Season

Wow guys, we made it a whole week into Blogmas, yay! I really hope you’ve been enjoying the posts! Honestly this is quite the accomplishment for me because I wasn’t sure if I could keep this going or not with my school schedule and homework. I was kind of afraid I would crash and burn with this 25 days of Christmas blogging promise, much like this kid running into a freaking cartload of suitcases.

Turns out, I’ve been able to keep it up and I’m super happy about that! My posts for the last week have been very fun to write and shorter than the usual posts I make. Do you guys prefer the shorter posts or the more elaborate ones that I spend a lot of time on? Either way, let me know! Anyways without me rambling any further, I wanted to talk about a more serious topic for today’s post. It’ll be pretty chatty so grab your hot cocoa and your softest blanket!

I go to a private Christian college in San Diego. I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned that before, but part of the requirements is attending chapel a certain amount of times per semester. As a freshman and sophomore, you must attend 33 times per semester, and as a junior and senior, it drops to 23. So currently, I go about twice a week to chapel. If I’m honest, I usually use chapel time to relax and catch up on course work, but other days I at least try to give most of my attention to the speaker. Right before Thanksgiving break, I decided to be more present during chapel and really try to understand the message. Looking back I’m really glad I paid attention because it really caused me to understand this time of year more clearly.

Thanksgiving and Christmas is a time for family and I’ve been lucky enough my whole life to have a close knit family with almost no hiccups. I’m truly blessed and I acknowledge that. However, during chapel the speaker explained how this time of year could be a great burden on a lot of people. It could be a time to remember a loss, or a time of great turmoil. It could be the anniversary of the passing of a family member or a friend, or even some conflict I couldn’t possibly understand. My point is, most of us are celebrating during this time of year, but I have never thought of it as a difficult season for others. We’re all so busy with our advent calendars and our decorating of Douglass Firs that sometimes we turn a blind eye to those who need our presence the most. I’ve never thought about Christmas in this way before, and it really opened my eyes.

My thoughts to you today are this: don’t stop celebrating this time of advent, but during this season of giving, sometimes all you need to give is your care and attention. You may not know what someone is going through even though it may seem everyone around you is cheerful and ready for major celebrations. I hope none of this sounds negative or brings anyone down, I just know for me personally I want to be very aware this holiday and I thought I’d spread that message for anyone who cared to listen.

For anyone who happens to be going through a rough patch this season, don’t keep it in just because the holidays are “supposed” to be an exciting time. Your feelings matter regardless of the time of year. My blog has always been a very positive little corner of the Internet, and I’m very proud of that so if you ever need a friend or simple advice, please don’t hesitate to comment or contact me! Even if you’d like to send an anonymous question through Tumblr, I’m usually pretty active on there. That may sound very random, but it comes from my heart. Loneliness and sadness is not something I wish upon anyone, so if I can use this blog to comfort another, I’ve done all the right things.

All my love, Sage

Simple Tricks to Keep Your Skin Clear This Season!

Hey everyone! As you may know, skin and the topic of acne has been a recurring theme here on the blog. It’s been a huge part of my life and something that has affected me for years. When it comes to my skin, you name it, I’ve tried it! But sometimes after all the steps, companies, and various products you could go through, it’s the simplest procedures you can do yourself that will make the biggest difference. Lately, my skin has not been very clear, so after lots of time trying to figure out why that was, I decided to take a step back and think about the basics. Here is a little list for you guys about the best ways to keep your skin clear through all the holiday festivities!

  • Drink water! I thought I’d start off with the easiest, most straightforward tips you’ve probably heard a million times before. Drinking water is one of the best things you could do for your skin and your body in general! Up to 60% of our bodies are made of water so why wouldn’t you hydrate the heck out of it?? Through busy schedules, I know it is extremely easy to forget about drinking water, but that’s no bueno. I’ve gotten in the habit the last four years of college to bring a hydroflask with me everywhere I go. If I don’t drink enough water, I end up getting pretty bad headaches as well. So all around for me, water is absolutely essential!
  • Clean your makeup brushes! Ah the dreaded and often forgotten chore of cleaning the makeup brushes. You should be cleaning your makeup brushes about every couple weeks if not more than that. Brushes and beauty blenders collect so much bacteria and oil from your skin and if they are not cleaned often, it could end in a pretty bad breakout. I understand this from personal experience. I’ll be the first to admit I’m extremely bad about cleaning my makeup brushes. It’s just something that isn’t at the top of my to do list…and it really should be! Whenever I have any major breakouts, I ask myself when the last time I cleaned my brushes was. I have an entire post about how I clean my makeup brushes here if you’d like to check it out, it’s really very easy just time consuming!
  • Wash your sheets! Another idea you wouldn’t think would cause breakouts! But the sad reality is that if you don’t clean your sheets often enough, your pillowcase will cause you to flare up. I usually clean my sheets every other week to try and avoid this. I also just love feeling clean, comfy and cozy in my bed so it’s a habit I’ve gotten myself into. Specifically freshman year of college I was religious about changing my sheets every other week on the dot!
  • Don’t workout with makeup on! There have been times in my life where I felt like I had to cover up my breakouts before working out. I look back on this and I just want to scream at myself! This is probably one of the worst things you could do if you’re mid breakout. Just the thought of having makeup on my skin and my pores opening up while running makes me cringe. You already sweat when you workout, so adding insult to injury by having a face of makeup on won’t do you any favors. I’ve come to the point in my life when even though I have breakout every now and again, I will never go to the gym with foundation on. Never ever again! However, this semester I have been taking yoga/sculpting class which has been surprisingly challenging! I have a design class right before yoga so I have a full face of makeup on. I think one of the main causes of my breakouts lately is going to yoga with this makeup on and working out in it. That’s been the only down side to having yoga in the middle of the day. I unfortunately have no time to remove it between classes. Luckily the class will end soon and I won’t ever have to sweat in makeup again!
  • Wash your face twice a day! Another fairly obvious tip. I use the face wash Cetaphil once in the morning and once before I go to bed. It’s very foamy and gentle and has worked very well for my skin the last couple years. When looking for a new face wash, try to avoid anything with beads in it and look for something softer. I also recommend finding a good face mask that really works well for your skin. Everyone is different, so you may have to experiment a little to find the perfect product for you. I’ve done so many face masks in the past and I’ve mentioned this before, but the Lush Mask of Magnaminty is one of the crown jewels in my skincare routine. I try to use it at least a couple times a week and it leaves my skin feeling refreshed and new. Wow, that totally sounded like a scam commercial, but I promise this product is a keeper!

That’s about it for my skincare list! Do you have any tips or tricks that keep your skin free of breakouts? I’m always looking for new home remedies to try out! Comment down below if you’d like to share or if you liked this list! Talk to you guys tomorrow for a little surprise announcement! xx

Fenty Beauty vs. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer!

Hey loves! I know many of you keep up with the beauty community, so I’m sure you’ve heard of the new Fenty Beauty line by Rihanna. After hearing so many reviews of it and endless beauty gurus on YouTube raving about it, I decided to try it out one day while I was in Sephora. I had one of the workers there match me to the correct tone. She was very helpful and informative about the product, so I’ll include some of her tips in the review below. Also, if you’ve seen any of my beauty related posts, you’d know that I am obsessed with the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer. It’s one of the only products I’ll wear every single day. So I thought today I would give a whole list of similarities and differences between Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty Foundation and the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer that I’m all too familiar with. Enjoy!

I think I’ll start off with Fenty Beauty! The first thing I noticed about this foundation is the simple packaging. Rihanna kept the font easy to read and chose a white lid and a translucent bottle. There’s some super beautiful and professional looking about it. A lot of makeup brands like Kat Von D and Urban Decay choose to go with more vibrant packaging, but I like how minimalistic Rihanna and her team went with this.

When I was at Sephora, one of the things the makeup artist mentioned about this specific foundation was how drying it is. This didn’t scare me too much considering I have very oily skin. Her advice was to make sure I used a moisturizer, which I usually do when I have my La Mer on hand. She was definitely correct with saying this. The first time I tried it out, it was definitely more dry than any other foundation I’ve used. But honestly, I didn’t mind too much. I’d rather start out more dry and add highlighter to look more glowy than to start off my makeup with an ultra damp foundation. That’s probably just me though because sometimes I get tired of my skin always looking more on the oily side. I’m not sure if the dryness is visible on the swatch, but it definitely felt more dry than say the Laura Mercier foundation or the tinted moisturizer.

As for the color, it matches me very well! I definitely still need to wear bronzer, but I use that with anything. I also wanted to touch on the consistency. I was shocked by how light and almost watery this foundation is, especially considering the high coverage it gives. It is in no way thick like some foundations and it doesn’t get cakey very quick, which I appreciate. I have been applying this with a beauty blender, but I think because of this light consistency, most of it is getting absorbed into the sponge. I am going to try applying this with a real techniques brush soon and see if that yields an easier application. The last thing I will touch on is how many shades Rihanna has offered to her customers. One of the main reasons people have been loving this so much is because there is a shade for every person. Whether you have flawless, snow white skin or a gorgeous ultra dark tone, there is something for you! And I think that is seriously so awesome and shows exactly what Rihanna stands for!

Up next: the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer (Oil Free)! For so long I was using the normal Laura Mercier foundation until I switched to the tinted moisturizer last year. It was recommended by my roommate and I’m so glad she mentioned it to me! Having skin issues for so long, foundation was really clogging my pores and was extremely heavy on my skin. Once I switched to this tinted moisturizer, I realized how much lighter it was and how my skin started clearing up a bit. It didn’t give as much coverage as the foundation, but it is completely buildable.

This moisturizer is obviously way more damp than the Fenty Beauty foundation. I use the moisturizer as a replacement for foundation, so it makes sense that the end result would be different. With Fenty Beauty, I could pull off wearing the foundation on its own without a translucent powder to set it. However, with this tinted moisturizer I 100% need to apply a layer of translucent powder over the top. If I didn’t, I would look like an oily mess, haha! While the moisturizer is a lot lighter, it requires that extra step to obtain a more flawless finish. I’m again not sure if it’s apparent in this photo, but it is more wet upon application than Fenty Beauty. Let me know if any of you can see a difference between the swatches! I could definitely feel the difference since I applied them back to back. It’s interesting that while the Fenty Beauty foundation is more watery than the moisturizer, the moisturizer gives a more glowy look.

There is no way you could go wrong with either one of these products. I definitely understand the hype with Fenty Beauty, but sometimes it’s great to just go with the classics and what works best for your skin type. The Fenty Beauty foundation I wear more when I go out at night since it is more long wear and the tinted moisturizer is perfect for your day to day activities and daily makeup routine. I personally believe they’re both worth the purchase. You can find any Laura Mercier product at Nordstrom and as mentioned before, Fenty Beauty can be found at Sephora.

P.S. I just came home for Thanksgiving Break, so I’m back in the O.C.! I also came home to a ton of Christmas decorations, so get used to seeing those in the background. Hope you like them! Let me know down in the comments which you prefer or if you’ve tried out the new Fenty Beauty foundation, I’d love to know your opinions on it! xx

An Honest Conversation With My High School Self

Girl, it’s just four years.

But that’s such a long time!

It seems like that now, but you’re graduating from college in 5 months.

Wow, I must have everything together by now.

Not quite, but I’m getting there.

High school sucks sometimes.

Yeah, but we all tend to dwell on things too much and for too long.

How can you not worry about things?? All of my teachers tell us everyday how much harder college will be.

They’re lying. College is so much better in so many ways that you can’t even imagine yet.

I’m in love with my best friend.

That will be a long journey for you.

I’m not going to my number one college of choice.

Your second choice is where you’re meant to be and has brought so many opportunities for you. Stop worrying about where you’ll end up in the future and focus on what you love.

I’m not popular, but I’m okay with it.

You’ve kept this mentality your whole life, but find more people who love what you love.

What will I do on my own?

Be strong in yourself and be confident enough to do little things like have lunch by yourself sometimes. It doesn’t have to be out of loneliness, it can come from a place of security.

I’m afraid of not being good enough and not meeting the high standards I set for myself.

You give yourself anxiety. Do the best you can and let it go. It’s not worth getting stomach aches and heart palpitations over.

I have a face full of acne and I’m gaining weight.

You’ll still get acne here and there, but it will clear up tremendously, especially from freshman year. It. Will. End. Even though you think it won’t get better. Everyone has insecurities about themselves, and these just happen to be yours.

I want to see the world.

You will go to 5 countries in 1 month and want to go back everyday.

I hate these school uniforms and I keep getting caught by the dean!

Those are hilarious memories, don’t get so upset over stupid moments that won’t last.

What does that girl (or guy) truly think about me?

Who actually gives a flying flip?? Live your life girl and don’t care what people think about you!

I go to 7 classes a day and I’m tired.

Yeah…that kind of sucked. Making your own schedule now is SO much better!

I almost passed out in the gym at Church yesterday because it was too hot and they make us wear heavy vests.

Those days make you treasure the rainy and cloudy days. When the pavement is wet and the air smells crisp. You don’t mind walking in the rain.

He held my hand today.

Those moments were the highlight of your day and you go back to them all the time. They were simple and innocent.

What now?

Take everything day by day. The horrible days make you appreciate the busy ones and easy times with friends are precious. Don’t take anything for granted, especially when mom does your laundry. Be hopeful for your next four years, and I’ll do the same for mine.

Here’s to the coming years of our lives and the new wisdom we will gain.

Where will you be?

Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed this little advice column/poem style. I’m not sure why I felt like making a very different post tonight, but I felt like I needed to switch it up and try something a little more artsy but still helpful. Let me know if there’s anything in this writing that you experienced in high school or worried about. They are very formative years that affect every person. I’d love to hear your experiences down in the comments!
